THE DAY OF THE DEAD OAXACA

 

The day of the dead is a very recognized tradition in Mexico, but this time we will talk about this same tradition in the state of Oaxaca, which is a state with great cultural wealth.


This celebration takes place on November 1 and 2

This tradition is about putting an offering, which in this case are the favorite food to relatives who have already died, so that their souls come and eat their favorite food and celebrate with the living this offering is made in the form of an altar where it is essential to put and occupy the following elements.



Candles

It is common to include one for each deceased,

 Sometimes the candles are placed in the shape of a cross.


Pictures

of the deceased as

 single or framed photos or even drawn or painted portraits


flowers

The marigold flower by its smell attracts the souls of the deceased to the offering. Many times the flowers are placed in the shape of a cross or forming a "path" to be followed by the souls.

 They also occupy - although to a lesser extent - other purple and white flowers.


Water

 it offers itself to the souls for their thirst after their long journey


Salt

It is placed in a container on the altar as a symbol of purification.


Copal

The smell attracts the souls of the deceased towards the offering and also, of prayer and purification


Confetti

China paper to which several cuts are made to form figures, several sheets are glued on top of the offering or in the form of a tablecloth.


Skulls

Skulls of various sizes are used, made of chocolate, sugar or amaranth. The skulls

Dead bread

Present at this time of year it can be sweet or salty.


Food and drink

The souls that visit the altar have traveled far and wide an that the now deceased liked the most in life.d need a good meal. Traditional Mexican dishes, seasonal fruits or pumpkin candy are included. You can also place the foods and drinks


Religious articles

Some Catholic elements can be placed: crosses, crucifixes, rosaries and images
